Proclaimed “the master chef of Urban fusion” by the LA Times, Andres Levin has established himself as one of the world’s top multi-cultural young film composers and music producers. Born in Venezuela, Andres went on to study music and composition at both The Berkley School of Music and Julliard.

The Latin American collective Yerba Buena was organized by producer and multi-instrumentalist Andres Levin, a native Venezuelan who'd appeared on records by Marisa Monte, Arto Lindsay, los Aterciopelados, and Tina Turner, as well as helming the critically acclaimed Fela Kuti tribute Red Hot + Riot.

After dates supporting the Dave Matthews Band, Yerba Buena signed to Razor & Tie and released their 2003 debut, President Alien. Island Life followed two years later.

Co-founded by producer Andres Levin (of Red Hot and Rio fame) and vocalist Ileana Padron (aka CuCu Diamantes), Latin soul/funk/rap collective Yerba Buena was born in Manhattan but owes as much to Cuba as New York.

Yerba Buena arose from Levin's wish to bring together a band capable of melding forms old and new, learning from each other in the form of a school.

Follow Me sees Yerba Buena combine their two previous releases (President Alien and Island Life) into one album, in an attempt to conquer the European market.

Gradually, the lineup coalesced, including vocalists Xiomara Laugart, Cucu Diamantes, and El Chino, percussionist Pedro Martinez, reed player Ron Blake, trumpeter Rashawn Ross, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, drummers Terreon "Tank" Gully and Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez.

When I arranged to meet Andres Levin outside of his Fun Machine Studios in SoHo, I wasn’t sure I’d recognize him among the pedestrians. I needn’t have worried. Physically, Levin is as distinctive as his music.

“It was spicy, it was edgy, it was related to weed and it was fun, just like our music,” said Levin, who was born in Venezuela and moved to New York in 1989.

"After many experiences, this is the recipe," Levin said.

"We started writing tunes and it came together very organically," he said in an interview with Ottowa Xpress. "Sometimes a producer has an idea and he records everything and then he puts the band together. This is the other way, it's a real band. Everybody's got a big personality."

After attending one of their earliest showcases in New York, Ben Ratliff of The New York Times hailed Yerba Buena as "one of New York’s best new dance bands, mixing up the Latin boogaloo of the 60’s, Cuban religious music, some American soul and Fela-like Afrobeat. It’s a history of the transmission of Yoruban culture in a nutshell, and it’s a good party."
